What is this project?

Fawley Waterside Limited is bringing forward new proposals for the former Fawley Power Station site in the south-eastern corner of the New Forest.  ​

The emerging vision for the site is for a commercial, employment-led development that maximises its strategic location on the Solent and follows on from the historic energy use.

The proposals will repurpose the site into a modern centre of enterprise, delivering a range of local jobs in construction and operation across the start-up, light industrial, energy, maritime and digital sectors, while supporting the region’s growth.

What is the planning process?

We are carrying out pre-application engagement, including meetings with council officers, and are now consulting the community, stakeholders and interested parties, ahead of the submission of a formal Outline planning application to New Forest District Council.

We have submitted an and have recently received a Scoping Opinion from NFDC which the team are considering.

Our team will be engaging key specialist bodies including the Environment Agency, Natural England and County Highways, as we process our environmental assessment work.

As this proposal is for an Outline masterplan, subject to its approval, further applications will be submitted in partnership with the future occupiers of the plots.

Why is the residential proposal not moving forward?

The previous proposals for a residential-led redevelopment were not financially viable and are no longer being pursued.

Is Hynamics part of the application?

The Hynamics Fawley Green Hydrogen project is one of the UK’s leading ‘clean’ energy developments. These proposals will be brought forward as a separate application by Hynamics and are excluded from the planning application red line. Why is the National Grid substation not included in the application?

The 400kV substation on site is part of the National Grid’s main grid distribution network. The masterplan excludes the substation from our red line due to their long leasehold interest on the site. Separately, National Grid is preparing a submission to Ofgem to request approval for the upgrade of the existing substation. They are at the start of a long process of approvals, although the aim is to relocate the substation within the site.

What jobs will the proposals bring?

The proposals will deliver a broad range of new jobs in both construction and operation of the developed site. These will include roles across the start-up, light industrial, energy, maritime and digital uses on site. From apprenticeships upwards, this will help retain local talent and attract new skills.
